About Lake's Folly

Lake's Folly was the first new vineyard in the Hunter Valley last century, established by Doctor Max Lake in 1963. In early 2000, Lake's Folly was purchased by Peter and Lee Fogarty and their family who, along with local Hunter winemaker Rod Kempe, have continued to maintain the integrity and direction of this significant vineyard.

Today, more than fifty years on, the tradition continues, with the first boutique winery in Australia making its two flagship wines - a Red (Cabernet blend) and a White (100% Chardonnay) - using all estate-grown fruit.

With a total production of around 4,500 cases, less then a quarter is Chardonnay. The most important aspect is great fruit and attention to detail from the vineyard to bottle.

In the vineyard, quality is derived primarily from the terroir. The vines produce low cropping high quality fruit, and are well established, giving consistency even in difficult years.

The winemaking aspect is very simple. Hand picking, gentle crushing and traditional open fermentation for the reds, barrel fermentation and extended yeast lees contact for the Chardonnay. Judicious use of French oak, small barrel maturation for both, hand bottling and that's it. No more, no less.

The true quality features of great wine are:

  • The varieties you choose.
  • Where you plant (Max Lake spent years looking and digging before he chose this site).
  • Pruning for quality (i.e. low production).
  • Trellising for flavour (If the fruit lacks flavour then so does the wine).
  • Time of picking (ripe fruit gives ripe flavours).

Most of our wine is sold through an annual mail order list, and can also be purchased through Cellar Door when available.

We invite you to sample the fruits of our labour.
